Ep.12/ Samantha Eckhardt

The incredibly knowledgeable and equally bubbly Samantha Eckhardt filled me on on all things Trans sex on film on this episode. What a delight it was to talk about nonmonogamy too, Slut4Slut, and creating community spaces for trans people to connect with history. Sometimes through porn!

Samantha Eckhardt is half of Gay24 Films, along with co-curator Jini Maxwell, and my gorgeous guest of the week. Gay24 Films regularly screen films at Flippy’s lesbian* bar in Naarm, welcoming Lesbians of All Genders.

We discussed one mega screening day, showing Castration Movie, before Gay24 Up Late playing Alley of the Tranny Boys, Transisters, Money Shot Blues, and Carta Monir’s Sideshave. We also mentioned Sulka’s Wedding and Kim Christy. You can see my little resource page of links here, which includes links to Aorta Films and Crashpad Series.

Elizabeth Purchell programs Queer Cinema Lost & Found, and is a historian, filmmaker, and founder of Muscle Distribution. Terre Thaemlitz writes on “I am not a Lesbian!”, which is delightfully Year 2000.

We talk a little about the word ‘tranny’, which you might read more about from local legend Katherine Wolfgramme, or icon Julia Serano, or about local Australian/Sydney history from Noah Riseman (a passionate ally) writing about Premier Lane and William Street, ‘Tranny Lane’ sex workers in the 1980s/90s.

I give a little shout out to Lesbirun, which is a great local jogging/walking group that’s super inclusive and friendly. When I go, I wear bright pink shorts, can’t miss me!

Some extra podcasts to check out include Carta Monir’s Huge Pages and A Secret Third Thing on all things beyond monogamy and polyamory. Samantha and Jini were also on RRR a couple years ago, listen here.

Samantha is out and about in community at Lulu’s and of course, you can always go to a Gay24 screening and see for yourself!
